Fundraising in aid of St Catherine's Hospice

Posting date: 22 Mar 2024

Stanton House will be supporting St Catherine's Hospice this year and raising funds in aid of this brilliant charity. Here's a little more about what they do and why this is a charity close to our hearts...

About St Catherine's Hospice

They are a local charity with a big ambition: to help everyone face death informed, supported and pain free. Providing expert hospice care, the are there for people in West Sussex and East Surrey when life comes full circle. They are also pioneer standards in end of life care through collaboration, research and training, reaching even more people facing death and bereavement.

Who do they support?

Every year, they care for around 2,000 people living with a terminal illness, this could be cancer, neurological diseases, and end-stage heart, kidney and lung diseases. They also support their families and friends to navigate the difficult period before and after death. Currently, they can only reach 1/3 of the people who need their help and an increasing number of people they care for, are of working age, and under 55 year old.

They have a state of the art, purpose-built hospice in Pease Pottage which they moved into late last year. It has 24 individual rooms, as well as additional space so they can offer wellbeing classes and outpatient appointments. Every patient has their own secluded outside space.  They also care for people in their own homes - helping individuals to die well at home, if they wish. Their dedicated team provides everything from medical advice to practical support around the house.

Our Director Sarah Wynn, has a very personal reason as to why we choose this charity. Sadly, her husband passed away a few years ago and St Catherine’s were there for her family as he reached the end of his life.

"They visited us regularly in our home making sure he was comfortable. They provided counselling to both my husband and I to come terms with his death and help us prepare for a very different future than we had planned and helped us to prepare for the unforgettable conversation that we had to have with our children to tell them that their Dad was not going to get better.

When the time came for us to say goodbye and he needed a place for his final few days, he stayed at the hospice and the staff were amazing not only looking after him but all of my family.

They were always there to ask questions, sit with me when times were tough, or bring the kids ice cream to help make them smile. Nothing was ever too much. The staff there are nothing less than angels."

How do we hope to make a difference?

Currently, St Catherine's is only able to open one of their wards as they need more funding to open the second. The services they offer are completely free. It costs around £10 million to run the hospice each year, but less than a third of this comes from the NHS. The rest is raised through the support and generosity of the local community and companies like ours.

We will kick start our fundraising for St Catherine's, when Sarah runs the London Marathon in April, in memory of her late husband. Any support you can give would be much appreciated.  You can donate here:
