Will my children grow up calling Siri and Alexa their best friends?

Posting date: 21 Feb 2019

Last night I had the rare pleasure of putting my laptop down and attending a live filming of the Ultimate Worrier show with Jon Richardson, by far my favourite comedian.

In the lead up to the event, we were asked to submit our biggest worries about living in the modern world and while mine had started as a dad joke, I soon realised the severity of the issue.

My greatest worry? Well, it's that my children will grow up calling Siri and Alexa their best friends.

We are constantly debating the social ability of our millennials and Gen-Z’s, arguing that they no longer have the ability to talk to one another but have the almost superhero-like ability to simultaneously stream, code and chat to their heart’s content online!

It’s a debate I have daily with my HR network: Are millennials the world’s greatest multitaskers or the most socially inept?

I see my children grow up in a Black Mirror World. Their eyes glued to a screen and fingers stuck to a phone (that definitely isn’t theirs) and I can’t help but wonder if the future is as bleak as I imagine it.

Will they be technically fluent? Most definitely.

Instagram famous? I hope not.

Ride a hover board to school? Perhaps extreme.

But, will they talk to Siri and Alexa more than their peers? It’s a huge possibility and my greatest worry.

I’d like to hear from my network to see what your biggest concerns are. Get in touch - What worries you about living in the modern world?
