Do you value career diversity?

Posting date: 07 Mar 2019

Career Diversity can do incredible things for a leader of finance and the company they work for but it really does take a bit of faith to make it work in the first place.

In the last few months alone, I have placed three incredible people into three incredibly different roles, and on paper, they wouldn’t be right at all.

Neither of the three had relevant sector experience, and it was a challenge to prove it didn’t matter. One professional was successfully placed into an Energy Company from the Financial Services Industry, another joined the Media Space from Health and Leisure and the third, they joined the Transportation Sector having only worked in Telecoms.

Despite having absolutely no relevant sector-experience the three professionals have continued to excel expectations and the value they have individually brought into their organisations has been monumental. This isn’t purely a success story but a plea for organisations currently looking at sector experience as the be-all and end-all.

With all three of the journeys outlined above I faced push-back from hiring managers who traditionally seek sector-experience and little more; but, when you present the sheer value that a person can add, the incredible personality that makes them a great cultural fit and their vast achievements to date that could not only be replicated but further improved, it’s a no-brainer.

I would urge all companies to consider career diversity as a vital attribute to your future talent pool and if you need persuading further get in touch for a copy of our new white paper which explores the benefits of career diversity in finance.
