Ralph Windham is the Head of Internal Audit at Asahi Europe, part of Asahi Group Holdings, the listed global beverage and food business behind Asahi Super Dry, Peroni, Groslch Premium Pilsner, Meantime and Fuller’s London Pride. Having studied Biological Sciences at Oxford University, he joined PwC where he qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Ralph worked at PwC for almost a decade before his move to Industry with Asahi Europe.

He discusses making the most of Practice and finding something exciting to do in Industry.

I would advise any newly qualified professional looking to leave Practice to only do so when they have exhausted the opportunities available to them in Practice. This is highly personal and will depend on an individual’s appetite, ambition and, for those that decide to move on, the moment arrives at different times. The number and quality of opportunities in Practice are huge, seek them out and then find the right time to move on.

Then, if you do leave, join a company that allows you to do something brilliant. Take your time, understand your value and do not feel pressured into accepting the first thing that comes along.

I think too often people leave Practice for the first company that comes by and this can mean they lose direction, engagement or become disenchanted. It’s worth remembering there are lots of options available.

I like to think I was able to heed my own advice. I decided to leave Practice once I was fully satisfied that I had taken as much as I could and given everything I was prepared to. From the start I had a very clear ambition to work in Industry in the longer term and with Asahi Europe I was able to move somewhere brilliant. As a result, my bosses were as supportive of my decision to move as they were of my career at PwC.

People want to know your story, what you did to shape it and why you are now looking to move on.
