Embracing the bumps in your career is the key to sustained professional growth

I joined Stanton House in 2011, so a very long time ago! I immediately bought into the Vision that Nick and Neil had set out when they founded the business, and it was easy to see my career developing at Stanton House.  Previously to Stanton House, I worked for another large multinational recruiter for almost four years, so when I made the transition over to Stanton House, I was already fairly experienced, and I was able to join as a Consultant straight away.

Shortly after joining, I was promoted to Principal Consultant and since then I have worked with some amazing people who have helped me become an expert in my market. I have recruited for a huge variety of businesses, from smaller SMEs to large PLCs – that is one of the reasons why my role was so interesting.

“I loved that a recruitment firm was finally putting customer experiences first”

One of the reasons why Stanton House appealed to me was their values. I loved that a recruitment firm was finally putting customer experiences first and I think a big part of why we are so good at what we do is that we are encouraged to deepen our knowledge in the market and become thought leaders in this space. When I joined Stanton House, I really enjoyed learning about what businesses do, how they generate revenue and just generally broadening my overall knowledge. The people we engage with are on the front line when it comes to business and hearing their experiences is fascinating. I still love the feeling of placing a role – knowing you have secured a candidate a great job but also knowing the client is delighted we have managed to find the best talent available for that opportunity is second to none. The recognition we receive from both our clients and candidates when we do a good job is a feeling you can’t beat!

“Recruitment is a rollercoaster –  with many ups and downs”

One piece of advice I would give to anyone joining the business is to remember that recruitment really is a rollercoaster –  with many ups and downs. Some days/weeks/ months can be great, and everything is looking up and going your way, then suddenly, things can change quickly, and everything can start going wrong through no fault of your own. I have learned to become far more resilient over the years and take the rough with the smooth. In fact, I think the key to sustained growth is embracing the bumps and using that time to grow professionally.

Undoubtedly, one of the best things about Stanton House is the training programme. It is unlike any other business I have seen. It is tailored, it is specific, it encourages a growth mindset and certainly gives aspiring consultants the ability to be the very best that they can be. Everyone in the business owns a personal development plan which is reviewed regularly, and everyone understands that learning and development continues at all levels of the business which is amazing. Plus, every day at Stanton House is fun, the people across the organisation are all on the same page and we all support one another, it’s a collaborative approach and we’re all pulling in the same direction.

“To this day, one of my proudest achievements at Stanton House is being the highest all-time fee earner for the business in 10 years!”

To this day, one of my proudest achievements at Stanton House is being the highest all-time fee earner for the business in 10 years! It goes without saying, but Stanton House offers an amazing commission structure so hitting those milestones early on is made much easier with a bit of competition. We have a competitive commission structure which is the obvious thing in recruitment, but we also have quarterly lunch clubs, annual trip incentives, and month-end dinners/drinks – We’ve been to Michelin star restaurants, Ascot races, and Henley Regatta to name a few.

This year marks my 11th anniversary with Stanton House, it’s been great to watch the business grow and flourish over that time and playing a small part in this journey gives me an enormous sense of pride. The world of recruitment is constantly changing, and I am excited about what the future holds and the opportunities that it may present.

If I’ve inspired you to apply for a role at Stanton House then my job here is done, my final advice to anyone joining the business is to ask questions, be curious, adopt a growth mindset and listen! You can't become great at recruitment overnight, it takes time, hard work and a lot of ups and down throughout! I would also recommend being thoroughly organized and planned – I’m yet to meet a successful consultant who isn’t organized, structured, and planned in their approach to being the best!
