One in Four PE Houses has a Digital Director - Should we?

Posting date: 04 Jan 2019

A fund-level Digital Director or 'Digital Operating Partner' is quickly becoming a must-have appointment within the Private Equity Industry, but with each firm and its portfolio being completely unique, I wondered how much consistency there could be between firms in the objectives of the role.

I decided to embark on some research and studied a sample of 80 firms that are UK-based; or international with significant operations in the UK, the sample comprised of firms with mature and high growth portfolios across sectors.

I discovered that one quarter of these firms employ a Digital Director,  but the role itself is as unique as the portfolio they serve.

This varies across firms with some focused on the growth of the online P&L, digital amplification of brands and global customer engagement, to others focused on sharing the cost of investing in technology across investments, GDPR compliance and Portfolio recruitment.

With the role lacking a definitive description, I’m keen to hear from you. What do you think the role should entail? What value do you think it could add to your portfolio?
